What do you think of Apple’s new iPhone 12 series?

Today, Apple announced four new iPhones as part of its 2020 phone lineup: the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The new iPhones mark a big push towards 5G for Apple, and for better or for worse, the rest of the smartphone ecosystem will be following with much-renewed interest, even more so than they had already. Apple rarely does things first, but they are the industry trendsetters, and everyone else will have to adapt their strategies accordingly.

The four new iPhones target different price points. This is a marked change from Apple’s usual strategy, wherein they usually leave the lower and mid-range fights to older generation devices or with SE phones. With the iPhone 12 Mini, Apple is sending out a strong message: a lot of people do need smaller phones, and these phones do need to be adequately competitive. Perhaps the only company consistently following up on this philosophy is Sony with its erstwhile Xperia Compact series and more recently, the Xperia 5 and Xperia 5 II. A smaller and comparatively cheaper, yet competitive, iPhone actually brings hope for more consistently competitive, smaller options on the Android side of things, bringing a breath of fresh air against the race to ever-expanding display and body sizes and ever-increasing price tags.

Other than the mini, the other iPhones from Apple are not as surprising and follow a more predictable pattern. The base iPhone 12 is going to be the benchmark for comparison for flagship killers on the Android side. The iPhone 12 Pro will be the competition for more expensive, upper mid-range phones, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be the phone for the ultra-premium Android flagships to watch out for. Apple’s pricing is always lopsided, and direct comparisons usually are not fair as Android smartphones are typically cheaper than the iPhones they are pitched against. But as we said, for better or for worse, these will be the new phones to beat.
